Nazaré is also known for the “Nazaré Canyon”, a massive underwater canyon that runs parallel to the coast and is responsible for creating the big waves that surfers love. Óbidos is a charming medieval town known for its well-preserved castle, which dates back to the 12th century, and its narrow cobbled streets lined with traditional white-washed houses adorned with colorful flowers.
One of the main attractions of the town is the Castle of Óbidos, which is located on a hilltop at the center of the town. The castle has been well-preserved and it has been turned into a Pousada, a hotel that is housed in a historic building.
One of the most famous events in Óbidos is the Medieval Market, which takes place every July. During this event, the town is transformed into a medieval village with street performers, musicians, and artisans dressed in medieval costumes. Visitors can also try traditional medieval food and drinks, such as the famous “ginjinha” (a cherry liqueur)
