On the base day we give Mafra a proper look — palace scale, UNESCO weight, town around it — then a countryside stop at Aldeia Típica José Franco, and finish with Ericeira by the sea. Time for stories and photos. Not a checklist shouted over a microphone.
I recommend not stacking more places on the six hour base. That keeps palace, tradition and coast honest. If you want a family winery, time with local artisans, or Queluz Palace, pick one extra when you book. Every extra is a full day shape. The summary shows the new total.

Palace and coast first, then a small producer where someone still knows the vineyard. Tasting and time at the table (wine and food charged on site unless we arrange otherwise). Full day. For guests who want Baroque and sea in the morning and a human cellar after.
2 · Local artisans · basket maker · potter
Not a souvenir street. Visits I arrange with people who still work with their hands — basketry and pottery in workshops that are not open as public shops. You meet the craft, the tools, and the person behind the object. Full day. Choosing this is also a small act of support: these skills only stay alive when someone still pays attention and pays fairly. I endorse these makers because the work is real, not staged for coaches.
3 · Queluz National Palace · royal rooms · gardens
For guests who want more royal history in the same day. Queluz is lighter and more intimate than Mafra’s monumental scale — façades, state rooms, gardens. Tickets are extra. Full day. Strong pair when palace architecture is the main love, not only the coast finish.

West of Lisbon you can stack too much and feel nothing. This base keeps three honest beats: royal and sacred scale at Mafra, countryside memory at José Franco’s village, salt and white streets in Ericeira. Enough contrast for a full chapter. Short enough that the afternoon in Lisbon can still be yours if you stay on the six hour shape.
Mafra National Palace
Built in the 18th century under King John V, Mafra is one of Portugal’s great Baroque landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Palace, convent, basilica, the famous library — a project of power, faith and display on a scale that still surprises people who only knew Sintra. We go for understanding, not a sprint through corridors. Entrance tickets are extra and sit outside the base price.
Mafra town
The palace does not float in empty land. Streets, square, everyday life around the monument matter. A few minutes of town context stop the visit feeling like a sealed museum box.
Aldeia Típica José Franco
Sculptor José Franco spent his life in clay. Here he built a life-size village of the region: shops, houses, windmill, forge, tavern, workshops. A living postcard of countryside tradition, not a fake theme park stop. Good bridge between royal stone and the coast — and a reminder that “tradition” was work, tools and neighbours, not only folklore shows.
Ericeira
Atlantic town. White streets, fishing feel, salt in the air, surf reputation that never fully erased the old sea identity. Time for a walk and a real look at the coast — not a ten minute coach photo stop. On the base day this is the breath of sea air after the palace. On a longer day it can hold lunch or a slower finish.

Local family winery
A small, family run house rather than a factory tasting room. Time to sit, ask, and drink what the place actually makes. Paid on site unless we set something different before the day.
Artisans · basket maker and potter
Private visits with makers whose workshops are not on the open tourist circuit. Basketry and pottery — slow skills, real materials, people who still do the work for a living. These are not Instagram pop-ups. Access is through relationship and respect for their time. When you book this extra you help keep attention (and income) on crafts that disappear quietly when nobody shows up. I only take guests to people I trust and endorse. Buying something is welcome when it feels right; pressure is not part of the visit.
Queluz National Palace
Often called a Portuguese Versailles in shorthand, though the feeling on the ground is its own: royal residence, ceremonial rooms, formal gardens. A different chapter of court life from Mafra’s monumental convent-palace. Guided visit sense with time in the grounds when the day allows; entrance tickets not included. Best when royal history is the thread you want to pull longer.
